Sanary/mer – Les Pointus en Photos
L”association des pointus de Sanary développe sur son site une photothèque de pointus et barquettes méditerranéennes anciennes particulièrement intéressantes d’un point de vue patrimonial. L’association lance un appel à ceux désireux de partager leur collection.
Serge Sourd, vice-président de l’association expliquait la génèse de ce projet: “Suite à une idée survenue lors de notre assemblée générale, nous avons travaillé avec Jean Louis Bernard, notre webmaster, à mettre en ligne ma collection de photos anciennes de pointus. Depuis l’idée a évolué et nous partons sur la créationd’une photothèque en ligne dédiée aux pointus et aux embarcations du patrimoine maritime méditerranéen”. L’association est donc preneuse de toutes photos ou cartes anciennes qui pourraient “agrémenter nos connaissances, sachant que le nom du généreux contributeur sera mentionné sur chaque photo retenue pour être mise en ligne”. Il s’agit de sortir des lieux communs et se faire une idée plus juste de ces bateaux d’époque à savoir que les pointus gréés à la voile étaient très nombreux, souvent très voilés, avec des bouts dehors impressionnants. Tous les gréements n’étaient pas latins, il y en avait de différents types (latins, misaines, tarquier ou à livarde , houari, mistic..), enfin les pointus roufés existaient dès les années 1925, peu après l’apparition de la motorisation sur ces bateaux. Les passionnés d’histoire peuvent d’ores et déjà découvrir cette nouvelle rubrique sur le site de l’association en attendant l’envoi de nouvelles photos d’éventuels contributeurs. Les prochains embarquements immédiats se dérouleront les 16 et 17 avril avant la 5ème Virée de Saint Nazaire du 10 au 13 juin.

An unique place on the Provence coast, is the little fishing town of Sanary-sur-mer. Its climate, location, history, culture and lifestyle make it an ideal choice to start discovering the coast of Provence.
Sanary – Facts of interest
- Greeks and romans had trading posts in the gulfs around Sanary-sur-mer. The surrounding beaches are rich in archeological vestiges and ruins (i.e:Port Issol)
- Intellectual and artists took refuge in Sanary-sur-mer between 1st and 2nd world wars – B. Brecht, T. Mann… lived in still existing houses in Sanary-sur-mer. Other famous anglo-saxon writers have spent time in Sanary. Amoung them, Aldous Huxley who wrote Brave New World (1932) in 4 months in La Gorguette area in Sanary-sur-mer
- Sanary is considered as the birth place of modern scuba diving and underwater movies. F. Dumas, P. Tailliez and J.Y Cousteau, also known as ‘Mousquemers‘, experimented modern scuba diving equipment and made famous underwater movies in the sea around Sanary-sur-mer (Port Issol, Bandol bay).
- Sanary-sur-mer is known for its unique wooden fishing boats
- Some of the eldest wineyeards (dating from roman empire) can be found in Bandol, Le Beausset, … few miles west of Sanary-sur-mer.

Jacques Cousteau, Frederic Dumas and Phillipe Thailliez have been the pioneers of modern diving and they started and developed their technics and skills in the waters of Sanary-sur-mer and Bandol.
